Little Bense or North Bense Island
Little Bense Island (c. 91 acres / 37 ha), sometimes called North Bense, is located about 200m off Bense Island. The two islands are separated by a rocky reef that can be crossed on foot at low tide. Although Little Bense formerly hosted livestock until the 1980s, the grazing pressure here was light and it is in better ecological condition than Bense Island. There was no fire here, but rodents and at least one rabbit were present until 2016. The north coast is heavily indented with many narrow sea chasms and the headlands between these have dense stands of tussock grass. Little Bense is home to a breeding colony of about 60 South American sea lions, and a wide variety of birds.
