Ecological restoration and wildlife research in the Falkland Islands.
SubAntarctic Foundation for Ecosystems Research
SAFER, the SubAntarctic Foundation for Ecosystems Research, is a non-profit organization engaged in wildlife research and ecological restoration in the Falkland Islands. On the four small islands we have in the western Falklands (South Atlantic Ocean), we are studying the plants, animals, and ecosystems here with a view to restoring the islands to prime wildlife habitat. For over a century, the native biodiversity on these islands was negatively impacted by the presence of rats, mice, and rabbits – invasive species not native to the islands. While these introduced pest mammals were eradicated in 2016 and the native plant and animal populations are now improving in their absence, there is more work to be done to ensure the islands become, and remain, a haven for subantarctic wildlife.
