Science and education outreach

SAFER regularly speaks about our work to tourists, schools, and community groups. In April 2025, SAFER’s Director, Peter Carey, attended the Science Diplomacy Summit in Washington D.C. and contributed a presentation on how expedition-style cruise ships are providing critical support for scientific research in the polar regions. In addition to supporting scientific teams by transporting them to otherwise hard to reach places, a growing number of companies also carry scientists who conduct robust research projects from the ships. And this all takes place alongside normal passenger operations. SAFER is grateful for the generous logistics support we have received over the years from Lindblad Expeditions, Hurtigruten, One Ocean Expeditions, Orient Line, and Voyages of Discovery.
